Every year, around 30 to 40 new churches are built in Italy. They are often built in new areas of urbanisation, in villages or the growing peripheries of cities. Sometimes, even to replace previous churches that have become too small to accommodate the increased numbers of the congregation. Over recent years, on several occasions these projects have been awarded to leading names in architecture: Piano, Fuksas, Meier, Gregotti, Botta, Portoghesi. These are architects well known by the public, whose frequent appearances in the international media have earned them the nickname of archistars. Their churches, in breaking with the traditional design of religious buildings, have caused debate even within the Holy See.
